Hand of wad

"£50,000 Snatch of the day," fumes the Daily Star, with the rag getting in a flap about that decidedly-average football journeyman Diego Maradona apparently being handed a wad of cash by the BBC.

The paper reckons the Beeb has forked out a whopping £50,000 to the "legendary football cheat" to spill the beans on the moment he put the ball into the net with the back of his hand, infamously knocking England out of the 1986 World Cup at the quarter-final stage. It still hurts - the swine.

Mr Nice Guy Gary Lineker, who scored England's goal in the 2-1 defeat, jetted off to Buenos Aires to meet the "Argie cheat" to quiz him for a documentary which will be shown during the World Cup this summer.

Needless to say, the Star will be getting red in the face all over again when the show is aired.

Forty years of hurt, 'n all that.
