Portugal may have a relatively easy draw in the group stages, but their luck has run out with Deportivo La Coruna defender Jorge Andrade destined to miss the World Cup after undergoing knee surgery.

The stylish lad severed a tendon in his knee in colliding with Deportivo keeper Jose Molina in the 3-2 defeat at Barcelona. Ouch.

It means the The 27-year-old is expected to be out for six months.

Portugal coach 'Big Phil' Scolari said: "His injury is terrible news for us."

The Euro 2004 runners-up have been drawn in Group D alongside Mexico, Iran and Angola. Easy pickings.

But the big-hearted Brazilian gaffer wants Andrade to be part of the competition by asking the defender to travel to Germany with the squad.

He said: "If he wants, he can still accompany us in Germany because he is still part of our team."

Non-playing, obviously.
