Good Rooney news

Wayne Rooney could make a dramatic return for England in the World Cup after the team doctor said the Man U striker was making a "perfect recovery" from his broken foot.

There had been fears Rooney would miss the entire tournament after suffering the injury when playing for United in last month's Premiership defeat at Chelsea.

But Dr Leif Sward is extremely happy with the 20-year-old's progress, although more will be known when Rooney has a scan on the injury on Thursday.

Sward told the Sun: "Everything points to a perfect recovery. I have the highest hopes for Rooney and the World Cup.

"I hope I can give a perfect answer after the next MRI scan on Thursday.

"He is not allowed to kick a ball or anything else that could make his foot worse before Thursday's examination.

"But he can put pressure on his foot now with the special protection he is wearing.

"I hope everything has healed well and I can say everything points in that direction. This healing process has been very, very good."

When Rooney suffered the injury on 24 April he was expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks. England's first Group B game takes place on June 10 when Sven-Goran Eriksson's side tackles Paraguay.
