Berlin boot-iful game

Footie fans shuffling half-cut around Berlin this summer might find themselves walking slap-bang into something odd and weighing 20 tonnes.

No, not Big Bad Helga from Monchengladbach, but a whopping great pair of silver football boots - topping out at some 39ft high.

Here's a picture of the boots being prepared for exhibiting; they are among a series of outsized sculptures showcasing major German inventions.

No, sauerkraut and frankfurters aren't among them. Instead, along with the football boots there's a giant aspirin, a car, the 'theory of relativity' and others representing modern printing and musical masterpieces.

No, not David Hasselhoff - don't worry.

Das modernisch fussball boot, we're reminded, was "developed by the Dassler family" (as in 'adidas', says the Times) and are "credited with revolutionising the sport".

These huge boots, though, wouldn't half play havoc with your modern-day metatarsals.
